EMDR
“The goal of EMDR treatment is to rapidly metabolize the dysfunctional residue from the past and transform it into something useful.”
-Francine Shapiro
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based, structured form of psychotherapy aimed at treating trauma. EMDR draws on mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, imaginal exposure, and self-regulating techniques. It involves recalling the most distressing aspects of a memory or experience while simultaneously attending to some form of bilateral stimulation. EMDR has been robustly researched and is considered a strong evidence-based approach to improving post-traumatic mental wellbeing.
What about with children? EMDR can be integrated into the Play Therapy setting, where children feel safer and more comfortable. Children can benefit from the positive effects of EMDR, reducing levels of reactivity, distressing thoughts, and somatic discomfort that comes with traumatic memories.
