Play Therapy

"To play it out is the most natural self-healing process in childhood"

- ERIK ERIKSON -

Play is fun and it is a child's natural language.

Through play children explore and learn about themselves and show the therapist what is happening in their physical and psychological world.

I practice integrative play therapy, drawing on humanistic approaches interwoven with expressive arts. I draw inspiration from the child-centered foundations of play therapy, while incorporating prescriptive interventions tailored to children based on their age, developmental needs, and their stage of treatment. I have found a more targeted and structured approach is often needed when there is trauma, significant anxiety, or depression. I practice integrative playful EMDR therapy for these children. Please see my page on EMDR if you are interested in learning more about this modality.

I view children and their presenting problems through an attachment-based lens, and am mindful of a child’s family system in the assessment phase. I ask parents to engage in the therapeutic process, through coaching sessions, family play sessions, and parents’ own therapy when needed. In play therapy, my goal is to help bolster a child’s internal resources, increasing their insight and contact with themselves, teaching them skills to improve their emotional resilience, and help them learn new ways to solve their problems.

At the core of my philosophy is a belief in the humanity of children, their innate and natural ability to grow and move toward what helps them heal and adapt when they are nourished and encouraged along the way.
